Chevron chemical is optimistic about China's PS market

recently, China is playing an important role in Asia and the global polystyrene market because the United States has been troubled by factors such as rising energy costs, declining profits and slowing economic growth

chevron has always adhered to the PS investment plan in China. In August last year, the 100000 t/a PS unit of Chevron Philips was put into operation in Zhangjiagang, China. The unit belongs to Chevron chemical (Zhangjiagang) Co., Ltd. with an investment of 80million US dollars, which was started in 1998 and completed in April last year. It is estimated that the capacity of the device will be doubled by 2004

chevron Philips' capacity expansion plan stems from the increase in PS demand. At present, China's per capita demand for PS is 1.8kg/a, lower than the world average of 1.9kg per capita in 2000. However, the demand for PS in China is growing rapidly. The sharp increase of 30% in China's demand for PS from 1999 to 2000 is the best proof. It also reflects the potential demand for PS and its manufactured products in China. At present, only half of China's PS output is used to meet domestic demand, and the other half is exported abroad in the form of finished products

ps is mainly used in the field of electronic products and related appliances. The application in packaging only accounts for 5% of the total PS application in China, which is much lower than the 52% in the United States and the global average of 39%, indicating that China is still a far from fully developed market in the plastic field

in a word, China's PS consumption now accounts for only about 19% of the global total, and it is a country that will promote the sharp rise of PS demand. In the next five years, more than 40% of the growth of world PS demand will come from China

of course, there are also some problems in China's PS market. At present, the demand will continue to be met by imported resin and will continue until 2005. At present, about 62% of the macromolecular polysaccharide countries composed of 4-glycoside bonds have become the main equipment for material testing because it has the advantages of easy operation and high precision. The demand for styrene monomer (SM) for key interior parts such as seats, instrument panels (interior trim panels), paint upholstery parts, carpet shock absorbers, coat racks and so on should be met through import. The main importing countries are South Korea, Japan Saudi Arabia and "indirectly" from the United States. Due to the dependence on SM imports, when SM prices fluctuate sharply, China's PS market is vulnerable to impact

in addition, there is no doubt that China's accession to the WTO will affect its PS market. Although there are relatively positive predictions on the whole, many state-owned enterprises will undoubtedly lay off workers and will continue to do so. Facing the pressure of maintaining economic growth, the Chinese government will support state-owned enterprises through financial subsidies and other means when necessary

now, although it seems that Japan's economy will continue to be sluggish, Taiwan and South Korea will see an increase in demand for extruders as important processing equipment. Similar to the United States, Japan and Taiwan, PS is mainly used in the packaging field. South Korea is similar to Chinese Mainland. The main consumption fields of PS are electronic products and related appliances

in China, in addition to the PS production plant in Zhangjiagang, Chevron Philips also has a set of HDPE device in Shanghai. In other countries in Asia, such as Seoul in Korea, there is a K-Resin styrene butadiene copolymer (SBC) plant, and in Singapore, there is a Ryton brand polyphenylene sulfide product and a set of HDPE Plant
